Higher Ed Services conducted a Recruitment Pilot Study in mid-2009 with 27 universities participating. This activity was on behalf of Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) Group of twenty Australian universities who work collaboratively on human resources issues to improve knowledge and encourage management best practice.
This study was conducted on a confidential basis and resulted in individual reports being provided in July/August 2009 with the final aggregated sector data report being issued in December 2009.
The HRIS Group had identified that one of the major challenges for universities is the attraction and retention of both academic and general staff. There was a paucity of national data on the nature of recruitment problems facing universities, which impacts the effectiveness of their attraction and retention policies and practices.
The pilot study was overseen by a Recruitment Working Party comprising representatives from six of the twenty universities in the HRIS Group. Higher Ed Services selected the Voice Project based at Macquarie University to undertake the online survey. This organisation comprises a team of experienced academic researchers and consultants and has been providing services to the tertiary sector since 1999.
Various aspects of recruitment in the Higher Education sector were examined:
- Identifying best practice and any barriers in the recruitment and retention of academic staff to Australian universities, given that academia is highly mobile and international in its intellectual focus;
- Identifying current practices in advertising and recruitment of academic and administrative and senior executive staff in Australian universities;
- Provide demographic data that will compare details between states, within states, regional versus metropolitan.
The HRIS Group and HES saw this pilot study a valuable national collaborative initiative driven by the higher education sector, which has added to the body of knowledge about university recruitment practices.
Further collaborative activities are planned in the future and all Australian universities were provided additional details with the aggregated report in December 2009. The aggregated report highlighted a number of key areas affecting recruitment with universities.
