"Balancing the Scales: The Challenges"

The challenges that universities face balancing growth with sustainability is the focus of Higher Ed Services annual University Finance and Procurement Conference ‘Balancing the Scales: The Challenges’ which will be held in South Australia next week.

HES, a company owned by Universities Australia, was set up specially to benefit the higher education sector and provides expertise in HR, finance, procurement, student systems and research administration as well as a range of consultancy services.

Dr Brian Spencer, Chair of the HES Board, said the conference will explore the current and future challenges faced by universities aiming to develop as financially secure and sustainable organisations.

“The conference will focus on strategies and programs to effectively implant the key issues of economic, social and environmental sustainability into the activities of campus operations and management,” he said.

More than 30 speakers and panelists will address the three-day conference which has attracted delegates from throughout Australasia.

La Trobe University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability) Professor Carol Adams will provide a practical insight into the initiatives and thinking that has led her institution to become known as a leader in sustainability.

The New Zealand Government’s procurement reform program will be explained by Paul Simonsen from the Ministry of Economic Development who will outline sustainable procurement in practice by drawing on the experiences of the recent Canterbury earthquakes.

‘Funding the Future’ is the theme that Monish Paul from Deloitte’s education division will explore, looking at why university financing needs reform, how a sustainable funding model can be ensured as well as investigating income diversification options.

Other topics include Fraud, Misconduct and the Financial Consequences, Greener HR and University Investment – Balancing Risk and Return. Case studies will include practical examples from universities with speakers sharing their knowledge and ideas.

Dr Spencer said that one of the outstanding features of universities which has distinguished them from other organisations is the capacity and commitment of staff to willingly share thought and practical leadership.

“For the 11th year, this HES conference will provide opportunities for people to come together to focus on areas of critical importance for universities and to share their expertise,” he said.

The HES 2011 National University and Procurement Conference will be held from 25 to 27 July at the Novotel, Barossa Valley, South Australia.
